I wonder if I'm doing something wrong because while price shopping memory for this computer it seems about twice what it should be. I did a spot check of a couple of other brands and found their prices have leaped up as well. What is going on?

Memory prices have recently shot up, for both DDR3 and DDR2. I suggest buying a used module (there's a few in the NBR Marketplace) or waiting until prices fall again.

Thanks for the info. Any idea why they have gone up or when the prices are going to come back down?

Is some manufacturer buying up everything?

Whenever there is a transition from one standard to another, production for the old standard usually ramps down (driving prices up since demand is still higher) while production for the new standard ramps up; because production of DDR3 isn't meeting the demand, prices are fairly high. Also, because of the economic recession some manufacturing facilities have scaled back production or closed down entirely. RAM prices have always been volatile.

So its going to be high until the transition to DDR3 is fully ramped up?

That, and other factors are at play. It's not really easy to predict future RAM prices.
