are there any confirmed known models that can fit this thing?

What notebook do you have? A lot of older notebooks use 12.5mm as a standard. Off the top of my head, I can only think of the older generation MBPs, but there are several others.
-
Form what I saw on Newegg. The unibody macbook can take but barely.

1.) Sony Vaio AW series. Current generation 18.4" machines. beautiful screen to boot.
-
Are you really sure that all 18,4" machines can accept the new 12,5mm height drives?
I have the HP HDX18t notebook and I would like to install a 160GB SSD from Intel on the first bay and a Western Digital 1TB Scorpio Blue on the 2nd bay, but i thought that this notebook is limited to 9,5mm drives. So can anybody confirm this? -
I think he was just stating that the Sony Vaio AW series is a current generation machine, in response to the first posts saying that mostly older models could take the drive, but I could be wrong.

That sounds like an excellent configuration, but finding the right fit can be exhausting. You'd think the manufactures (or aftermarket) would come up with a better system to streamline these upgrades and add-ons.
Incidentally, is the WD a 7,200-rpm? -
It is not offered by HP. It's definitely an aftermarket upgrade, but it is really simple to do. You only need to open the HDD cover (4 screws) from the bottom and you gain straight access to the HDD bays. The only problem is to make sure that the bays can accept 12,5mm drives.
The new Western Digital 750GB and 1TB drives are three platter design and have a 12,5mm height that make them incompatible for most modern notebooks.
I think that the highest capacity 9,5mm standard drives are 640GB from Western Digital, Toshiba and Seagate.
P.S. If I remember well, some Asus notebooks (G and M series accept 12,5mm drives) but what about the HP HDX18t?
Western Digital 750GB and 1TB drives are 5 200rpm. -
A step in the right direction for laptop manufactures
Hardly worth it since my HDX 18 came stock with a 500 GB drive.
Again an unacceptable compromise. -

If your optical drive is a 12.7mm unit, common in 14"+ notebooks, then can use an optical bay caddy to house the 750GB/1TB 12.7mm 2.5" HDDs. See sig on optical bay caddy for more info.

That is an excellent suggestion. And a perfect use for the bay.
Now, just how convenient ar they to plug-in and remove? -
i have a hp dv5t, inspiron 1720,hp tx2000,hpzv6000,asus c90.
as long as one of those will fit it i'll pick one up. -
I was just talking about the AW and stating that it was a current generation computer.
-
@Krane: very easy. i have 500gb inside and 320 (original) in dvd bay. using hotswap! http://mysite.verizon.net/kaakoon/hotswap/index_enu.htm , if i do need the dvd drive i can just hot remove and replace. i only have one screw that holds in the drive bay but i rarely travel so do not bother putting it in. check if your dvd is hd0 or hd1 as this may cause some probs booting when drive is removed and hard disk is installed. in that case you will need drive bay with "primary/slave" jumper so laptop does not try to boot from dvd disk. i have "boot-it" installed on both drives which gets around this prob for me.

list of notebooks that can fit the 750gb 12.5mm hdd?
