so ive been looking at this notebook(yes i know its not much of a looker) and i was wondering about the proc as i know relatively little about lappy hardware. how is it? how long will it last? 2 years playin games? should i just think about the dell 1520? the hd-dvd player in the acer is a definite plus though. will the dell have hdmi out? also im thinking about replacing my desktop with one of these since i cant afford to keep both at age 15. do you think thats wise. i really like gaming and id try to make that 8600 gt last a couple years probably. with tha being said. do you think i should just stick to desktops with my limited income? ( i build my own) or do you think ill be happy with a lappy. i really like the portability and i think it would be better for school and stuff. idk what do you think? sorry for going on and on but this is something i have to think long and hard about.

    What notebook?

Other options include the Compal IFL90 which also has the 8600GT. Dell has their new Vostro lineup, which is pretty much cheaper versions of their Inspirions, you should check that out.

Desktops always are a good amount cheaper or same price with much better configurations.

Member “pocketgamer” started a thread about this Acer couple weeks ago If remember right w/video card and w/HD-DVD price can not be beat only question why only 1.5Ghz CPU? Well “pocketgamer” might of figured it out when he got it home, HEAT. But he was very happy w/it. 1.5Ghz should handle anything normal, unless you do something very CPU intensive should be OK. Designed by BMW, can't go wrong for price! Search for old threads, $100 cheaper few weeks ago. I have 1.6 Turion 64X2 runs fast does lots and this 1.5Ghz CPU is faster than mine!

How limited is your income or rather how much would you spend for your computing solution? A gaming notebook definitely will be pricey especially if you want it to last a couple years with the latest games to come. I'd say get a desktop if you can help it. Otherwise some people have an inexpensive laptop for their school/work and a desktop too for gaming since desktops have a lot more options for expansion/upgrade. The sum of the laptop and desktop is sometimes cheaper than a really good laptop.

Go to XoticPC or PCTorque and you can build a laptop that smokes this Dell, and for about the same price.

    You can get:
2.0 ghz proc. (1.5 won't even handle Vista well)
    Same video card
    Higher FSB speed
    Faster HD
    WiFi with n

Unless someone has real world experience with this 1.5 CPU not working well in Vista I would doubt. Vista minimum 1Ghz but this is C2D faster than much higher clocked P4's (maybe even 3Ghz) and clock for clock better than anything else on the market. Just my opinion.

well since you are only 15 i don't think portability is that big an issue for you, you don't have to bring your computer to class nor do you go on trips most of the year. So desktop is definitely a much better choice. A desktop you build by yourself for around $500 should be much better than a $1000 laptop in terms of raw performance.
