I have a dell XPS m1710 laptop. The current processor is as follows:

    Model Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz
    Speed 2 Ghz
    Cache Size 4096 Kb

Is it possible to have this upgraded, or once a processor is in a laptop, its hard to remove etc? I don't know much about upgrades with laptops, I know with a desktop it is a lot easier. I was just wondering if my laptop will have life in the respect of processors in years to come.

The CPU you have is going to last for a few years to come functioning for most tasks just fine. Yes you can upgrade, I believe T7400 2.2Ghz and T7600 2.4Ghz will work. I don't think you will have to as in a few years it might make more sense to upgrade entire laptop.

The M Meroms are being discontinued by Intel, and future (some current) processors will not work. The best one you can get is a T7600, a very minimal upgrade on the T7200.

Ah ok, Thanks for clearing that up. I just like keeping my computer as updated as I can. I know that the m1730 came out recently, and I just purchased this in june.

The most you can do to upgrade your laptop, is get a new hard drive. The hard drive is always the slowest part of the computer.

In a year or so, get a new hard drive and you will notice more than if you bought a faster processor.

I agree, upgrade the hard drive and ram(you can install 4gb of ram though you will only see ~3GB due to a chipset issue) before even considering a CPU upgrade.

Is it a chipset issue or 32 bit OS issue? Would 4GB work on 64 OS? How do we know he does not have @7200 HDD already? Are Dell's HDD's a bad brand? I don't see any system info other than CPU.

The 3.25 (give or take a bit) limit on RAM is a 32 bit OS issue. The entire 4 GB will be visible on a 64 bit OS.

There's no such thing as a Dell HDD. Dell uses a variety of manufacturer's for their hard drive - mine for example is a Hitachi. I don't know who all they use, nor which company constitutes the majority of their harddrives, but they're all well-known brands: Hitachi, Samsung, Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor. You can find out which type you have in the Device Manager. It is a good point that no HDD is listed - if Jzj already has 7200 RPM an upgrade won't be very noticeable, even in a year.

The Dell XPS M1710 has the Intel 945PM chipset which can only see ~3GB with 4GB physically installed even with a 64bit OS(refer to the notes in the Hot ram Deals).
