    Hello,
I have this old m5310 emachine(AMD Athlon 1791MHz, 512MB currently) . Was thinking about upgrading the ram on it. Anyone have any suggestions, or maybe someone tried it and can advise me please.

    Thanks

What do you do on this machine? Upgrading your RAM to 1GB is the best idea if you want to make the machine run faster.

Download CPU-Z and run it; go to the Memory tab and take a screenshot of that (Alt + Printscreen key, then paste into Paint and save). Post it here and we'll tell you what type of memory you need.

Your laptop takes DDR266 (PC2100) memory according to CPU-Z. You have 2x 256MB modules, so you will need to take one of those out to add in a higher-capacity stick.

How much RAM do you need - as in, what tasks do you perform with the notebook? You can check your RAM usage at any time by hitting Ctrl + Alt + Delete and then going to the performance tab; look under PF usage.
I think if you put in a 512MB module and then had 1x2 56MB + 1x 512MB (768MB total), that would be a decent upgrade.
