    Explanatory notes:
??: discontinued. Can check ebay for used units.
N/A: no data available or drive doesn't support NCQ to allow multiqueued benchmarking.

    Notes
    1. Compatible adapters that can use these SSDs in 2.5" systems
      - microSATA-to-SATA: US$13, US$35
      - mSATA-to-SATA: US$22
      - microSATA-to-IDE: US$15 &

    2. A SATA-I interface tops out at < 130MB/s.

    3. You can achieve much higher read/write performance by using your SATA controller in AHCI mode. If you do this, the NCQ will provide better 4KB performance than you would get in IDE mode. shown.

    4. If you have an optical drive then could also do a DIY: Adding SSD or HDD storage using an optical bay caddy using a 2.5" SATA SSD/HDD.

    5. Some SSDs don't have TRIM support.Use Tony Trim to help GC along. Note: XP/VISTA doesn't support TRIM. Only Win7 and up does.

    6. flashfire accelerator increases small file writes on older SSDs.

PC notebooks with 1.8" microSATA drives:

    • Dell Latitude E4200, XT2
    • Fujitsu P163
    • HP Elitebook: 2530P/2540P, 2730P/2740P
    • HP Envy 13, 14, 15
    • Lenovo Thinkpad: X300/X301, T400s/T410s
    • Samsung X360
    • Sony VAIO P, TT

Please post any new microSATA/mSATA SSD details/Bench results in this thread so they can be included in these tables.

256GB 1.8 TRIM-the 2.5 variant out performs the 1.8 SSD a little. With the 2.5 drive you can hit 220/185 in CDM but not with the 1.8 drive.

    Some benchmarks

I just bought a new intel 1.8 160gb G1 for 150$US. What the difference between G1 nd G2 in term of speed? I gotta look into the tony guide, thanks.

Not sure how to integrate that info in the table. Do I have half the results since it's RAID-0? Or can you bench one of them without RAID? I'm surprised at the 4kb-Q=32 results. Looks like the Sammies can't do AHCI.

G1 speed is supposely onpar with the G2. You do however miss out on TRIM, so would need a Tony Trim or sdelete to help GC along to maintain high write speed.

Yes its RAID just make it half those numbers and you will get one SSD ..
yes its not the best ssd but its ok am happy ..
and it can do AHCI no problem why not ? ..

Your results look onpar to Rachel's PB22J ones here. Maybe Rachel could run CDM 3.0 to get 4kb Q=32 results as well?

It can run AHCI but doesn't appear to benefit from AHCI's NCQ mode. Others like the X18M G2, C300, SF1222 are getting > 150MB/s 4kbQ=32 multithreaded reads.

    what does it mean onpar?

    these benchmarks may vary
if i run it again the numbers will be different ..
but these 1.8'' are exactly the same as Rachel's just different firmware code

    @Rachel
    .. my 1.8'' actualy did HIT 220 and 190 (not raid 0)

Musuta are you using the 1.8 SSD with some kind of adapter? I am using it in an ultraportable laptop that only takes 1.8 Microsata SSD's. I think there might be a difference there. I'm interested in seeing results from others that use this in 1.8 systems such as my own. I can't get my results any higher than that, i've tried.

    Edited to add:
These are my CDM3 results run at 500MB. I am using the latest Intel storage drivers and drive is quite empty and i turned system restore of. I've never seen my drive get over 210 and the write scores are weaker than the 2.5 Samsung/Corsair G2 drive in my SZ . Either way though 206 is near enough to the advertised 220 lol. I've though certainly seen some very good results for the 2.5 drive.

I've also used the 1.8 128GB PBJJ2 and these were my results
    [IMG]

Btw, this is a benchmark for the Intel 160GB X-18M used in a Sony TT.

As this is a thread about benchmarks this is my Sony TT in RAID using 128x2 PB22J with the latest Intel storage drivers and write back cache disabled as it did not improve my scores.

while true in general, so far my g1 never needed anything over the last 1.5 years (is it really that long? woah), and still performs great. write speed is still high, all is fine.

i guess with my next laptop, i'll get the g3.

    Hello
    For all
Everything depends of machine and of system and type of connection and MAINLY for your controller chipset in your laptop
(IDE AHCI or RAID) anything can throttle SSD to work full speed
If you have ultraportable laptop there MIGHT be set some restrictions(limitations) in IDE/AHCI controllers ..
am using my 1.8'' SSDs in RAID as pictured below and it is second generation
    MMCRE28G8MXP - 0VB it is same as 2.5'' MMCRE28G5MXP - 0VB

    hi guys!

here are benchmarks from my tz and my new tt. a little advice up-front: avoid the sandik oem 5000 uata drives for the tz-series (or actually in general). they are cheap, but they suck (not really fast, no warrenty, no firmware updates, no support whatsoever).

let's get back to benchmark business...

I have a 1.8" Micro Sata SSD drive I was using for my 2730p that my buddy is thinking of taking for his x220.. My question does is it even possible to use it on that laptop? From what I understand it requires mSata, which is different from micro sata correct? Is there an adapter to get it working??

mSATA is smaller than a 1.8" microsata SSD. There is no way to adapt it to fit in the X220's mSATA slot.

Your buddy could however use your 1.8" SSD in the X220's 2.5" 7mm drive bay. Just earlier on today I described how this could be done: Adapting 1.8" microsata SSDs to fit in the X220's 2.5" drive bay.

If your buddy wants to keep the 2.5" mechanical drive, yet introduce a boot SSD then consider this offer that just appeared today: http://forum.notebookreview.com/not...-us-250-120gb-renice-x3-sf1222-msata-ssd.html .

Will intel release anything to replace the G2 1.8" micro sata ssd's? I would like to get a larger one soon, but will wait if something new is on the horizon.

Question was asked recently: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sol...580380-where-can-i-buy-intel-320-1-8-ssd.html . Intel do indeed list a 300GB 320-series SSD in the 1.8" form factor.

If can't wait then there's 120GB/240GB SF1222 microsata drives already by Renice, OCZ Vertex 2 and OWC Mercury Aura Pro and also a 128GB/256GB Micron RealSSD C300.

    Is a 1.8" drive just a good as a 2.5" drive? Specifically the Cruial C300 256gb?

Will it use less power because of being 3.3v rather than 5v? I'm assuming all SSDs could use 3.3v but use 5v because that is what 2.5" HDD use. So theoretically a 3.3v SSD should be better.

i've ordered one just for the sake of not getting sold out on, but i'm feeling that the RunCore (although its ~$130 more to get it) but its speed seems close to triple of the intel?

any last minute decisions that might make me cancel the intel and order the runcore? or should i stay and i won't feel the difference?

    thanks

the mSATA in Lenovo systems is SATA-II so the Runcore T50 will see seq read/writes be interface capped to < 250MB/s. It's performance will be similar to the SF2281-based Agility 3 below. The $130-$160 premium over a 310 for the T50 is not worth it imho unless you need the extra 40GB capacity. Still you have cheaper 120GB SF1222-based Renice X3 and Runcore I50 as an option.

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
    Left: 120GB SF2281-based Agility3 in SATA-II system from here
    Middle: 120GB SF1222-based Renice X3 from here
Right: 80GB Intel 310 from here

If you wanted the fastest mSATA SATA-II SSD then I'd suggest hunt down a Samsung PM810. It has seq=230/142 and 4kb q=1/32 of 62/128. There were a few on ebay.

I'd stick with the Intel or the Samsung SSD since those are known to be reliable. I wouldn't want to buy an mSATA, or anything that will store data, to have questionable reliability.

    Edit: Got it today!!!

I have been following the development of the SF-2281 mSATA since Computex and have seen it in person with both SandForce and AData. Runcore will be the first to release (one on the way for testing) and I believe there is no cap whatsoever so long as your system is running on a newer SB platform capable of SATA 6. The new mSATA design was created to allow the higher transfer speeds through the reg mSATA interface (or so I am told).

SATA2 or SATA3 is not the 'cap' - DuraClass is the 'cap' on SF based SSD's.

This is probably good enough place as any to ask this, but IDK:

I got myself a Intel X18-m SSD a while back -its great to have a SSD again- but just today I tried putting it (or any 1.8" HDD I have) into the Toshiba M4 I have using this adapter I just got SATA to Micro SATA adapter for 1.8 inch SSD 3.3V or 5V | eBay (which works just fine with a 2.5" usb housing) but does not when it is in the M4. Without anything in the drive bay at all it will quasi boot and say "HDD error... blah blah", with just the adapter in there the power cord indicator LED blinks orange 7 times (on the 7th blink it holds for a bit) then a single blink after that, when it has a 1.8" SSD or 1.8" SSD/HDD hooked up it does the same 7 blinks then 1 blink... any old 2.5" HDD will work no problem

So, using my extremely sharp powers of deduction  I came to the conclusion it was the adapter that isn't playing nice with the M4 for whatever reason...

So, I need some good advise on a adapter that will most likely work between a G2 Intel X18-m to a older SATA I laptop, yes I saw the links in the first post, but I didn't see anything really conclusive (and as I don't know what the issue is, I can't quite pick the 'right one')

I had an issue using my 1.8" Renice X3 in my optical bay caddy. Originally I had a 1.8" to 2.5" adapter that was a straight pass thru adapter with no voltage conversion. It worked on my USB enclosure but did nothing in my optical bay caddy. Then I tried a newmodeus 1.8" to 2.5" adapter finding it worked without issue. So then I just added a tiny 3-legged 5V->3.3V voltage regulator (5V input, GND and 3.3V output) to my original adapter's uSATA connector and it now works fine.

are you sure that is what is causing it? because the M4 is at least going part way through the bios with nothing at all installed (it displayed an error message about no drive present), but with just the converter alone plugged into the sata line the power LED would only blink (the screen doesn't even power on at all, no fans or anything else either)

I think it has a 3.3V converter built into it as it says so in the ebay listing -though we all know how trustworthy those are- unfortunately it is the type of converter that is all rubber encased so I couldn't simply open it and check... maybe I will contact the seller about it not working as advertised (they stated "This adapter can be used to power up your 1.8 inch Micro SATA 3.3V SSD drive from a 22 pin SATA female receptacle with a DATA signal and a 5V power source" which is what I am doing)

Well, after further testing (the adapters still don't work in my M4, but they worked in another laptop -SATA II I believe- and it always works with USB SATA HDD adapters, so maybe the M4 has an issue with the adapter converting to 3.3V), and while weighing my options as to how I plan to use the M4 and so forth, I decided to head out to microcenter and pick up a 2.5" SSD simply because I want the Intel for my 2730p and the M4 to have its own anyways

I got a 64GB Crucial M4 as it has the best reviews and specs for a decent price -only $ 20 more than the lowly Kingston or A-data/ microcenter branded one (lol @ the matching product names, and for me for wanting to put a SATA III SSD in a SATA I laptop from yesteryear, but it runs great so far, though it will be tested further)

    Updated main page

    (i) keeping a list of systems that have mSATA or 1.8" slots. Can post new ones as they appear.
(ii) Intel 310 mSATA link changed to MDD. They actually have them in stock.

Could we also add some web-stores where someone could buy these drives?

I live in Europe and am trying to get my hands in one of these with no luck.

OT - can't help you. NVidia wouldn't supply the MCP79 instead the NVidia rep gave a snipper specificially answering my question on x1 pci-e ports. Suggest you install and run pciscope - it will list some of the PCI register details for this chipset..

Samsung Series 9 (NP900X1A, NP900X3A) are mSATA-capable systems. (The fast Renice T50 is to be tested in one.)

Has anyone tried mSATA in the a Thinkpad X121e or Edge E120 yet? I had seen a few people reporting them not working in with the AMD cpu in the X121e, but I was hoping that it would work with the i3 Sandy Bridge cpu.

**EDIT** I put an OCZ Nocti in it today and couldn't get the BIOS or Windows to recognize that it existed. **

Despite being a lurker, Nando4 has put out an incredible fidelity of good reviews and advice, culminating in my purchase of the Lenovo X220.

One quick point - I've seen it said in a few notebookreview.com threads that Nando4 and others have stated the PM810 mSATA is the fastest solution for the Lenovo (3 Gb/s Capped) mSATA slot.

I don't really see that on other sites. I was confused looking at the front post of this thread until I realized that somehow the tomshardware review may have been transposed incorrectly into Nando4's convenient table.

When you look closer at the tomshardware review, the full Crystalmark 2x4 grid should read:

    (Read / Write)
    Seq - 264.4 / 173.0
    512 - 230.2 / 142.2
    4k - 15.6 / 61.8
    4kQD32 - 128.4 / 39.9

    So it should actually read:

    Samsung P810 ............... 16 | 128 ............... 264 | 173

Placing it second last, not first, ranked by 4kb (which I agree is "feels faster").

This would validate some other reviews ranking the intel solution faster, such as floating around like here:
Samsung PM800 128GB mSATA SSD Review - Crystal Diskmark and AS SSD Testing - The SSD Review

Also, here is a snapshot of my SLC 20 GB Intel 311 for the archives:

I might be able to help a bit...just got a X220 in with the Samsung drive. I am going to be actually setting it up with the fastest hdd and a large hdd and then installing Dataplex (see Synapse/RevoHybrid) to see if this might be a viable option for notebooks. I have just about every mSATA released at my disposal including the Intel, Runcore, Renice, Samsung, AData and I just received the Kingston.

Personally, being able to have a 1.5TB drive running at the speed of an SSD is a huge benefit I think.

Actually sorry....I misquoted because the mSATA in this machine is the PM800 64GB but it is still pushing 254/177 high sequentials right now...

The Dataplex software is intriguing for the X220 with an mSATA. Is it hard to set up the software with an arbitrary SSD?
