So whats the difference between the two apart from physical size and price? is the mSATA SDD faster than the normal 2.5'' SDD? Thanks

Depends on the model of mSATA you're looking at. A SATAII mSATA SSD will be about as fast as a SATAII 2.5" SDD (and same thing for SATAIII versions). Aside from physical size, they're pretty much the same thing.

msata is more expensive
msata weights less
msata is usually a bit slower
msata is smaller
msata sometimes consume less power
just go with a 2.5" -
What you say is true for some mSATA, especially of the older generation. But some of the new generation of mSATA drives such as the Crucial 128GB Sata here: CT128M4SSD3 - 128GB, mSATA Solid State Drive , from Crucial.com and the 256GB here: CT256M4SSD3 - 256GB, mSATA Solid State Drive , from Crucial.com are priced at the same level as the regular 2.5 inch drives. And, their stated performance is the same as their larger siblings.
if crucial maintains aggressive pricing, then mSATA drives can be tempting option for some.
mSATA SDD vs normal 2.5'' SDD
