i moved into my dorm on sunday and i have my laptop and tv on the same desk. today i went to play my ps2 on the tv and noticed there was a blue mark on the bottom of my tv screen where it is closest to my laptop. i just got my internet working about an hour or two before i noticed the problem. my roommate said it looked like when you put a magnet near a tv. the mark is not very big and not very noticeable on most channels of my tv but i am concerned it has something to do with my laptop. anyone experienced something or heard about something similar?

Unusual. The only two locations I can think of for a magnet in a notebook are the speakers and a magnetic latch for the lid, if it has one. In either case, you would literally almost have to touch the TV tube with the notebook lid/speaker for this to happen.

Neither should be powerful enough to cause a tv trouble. Any speakers nearby (shielded or not)? Try degaussing, if your tv has that capability. If not you may have to bring it in for repair.

Maybe its the battery? Nevermind, I don't know what I'm proposing right now.

i don't think it is the speakers. i've had my stereo speakers by the tv for a few days but the only time i used them wasn't even today. i'm actually pretty sure it is heat coming from the computer. since i didn't have internet the first few days they were by each other i haven't had my laptop on for more than about 30 mins at max. today it's been on for about 4-5 hours.

I'd say it's the stereo speakers. I foolishly had my stereo speakers next to my tv last semester for a while and I didn't use the stereo speakers very often either, but let alone, after a little bit, I got really bad discoloration on the TV. I didn't even think about it until one of my friends said something to me about it. I moved the speakers immediately and the next day the TV was fine.

hmmm...that's very interesting. i wouldn't have even thought about the speakers because it just happened today all of the sudden even though i had them right near each other for a few days now. i'm gonna try moving them though, hopefully that works

there could also be a high voltage line running behind the wall, I have seen that with computer monitors they always need degausing cause of a high voltage line running in behind it.

Heh, I could have worked that out if you'd mentioned you had external speakers... :p

The speakers could be best described as being cheap and cheerful, I presume? Most PC speakers worth more than a couple of dollars are shielded to prevent this.

Am I the only one who'd have just tried moving things around to begin with, instead of waiting for people to tell me what to move? ;)

Wow, that sounds like when my friend sets his Treo 650 next to one of my desktop monitors, it makes it flip out like you stuck a magnet on the side. Do you have a wireless router or something sitting near by as well? Or maybe a mobile broadband card (like the ones from sprint) or something on your laptop?
