I want to try to squeeze out as much battery life as possible, as I do not have Optimus.

How do I run the HQ cpu like a U cpu when on battery? I'm looking for software that can do this.

I want to soft-disable 2 cores, and cap the speeds at 1.3ghz while using minimal wattage. This should be sufficient for word processing and internet.

Throttlestop doesn't seem to work. I checked off all the boxes.

well, limiting the 6700HQ to 80% maximum power state reduces clockspeed to 2GHz on 4 cores and limits power draw around 25W for me. Though it's still 10W above the standard ULV.

My experience with the Skylake quad core CPUs is that the power management is very effective and if there's no work to do then the various components effectively shut down. Here's a graph I made last year of how CPU speed and power consumption (package power according to HWiNFO while running wPrime 1024M to load the CPU) varied for different settings of the maximum CPU state. A 50% maximum processor state should give you the speed you are looking for.

    Processor power consumption graph.jpg

You can also experiment with software disabling of CPUs by setting the maximum number of processors in the Boot.ini file (run msconfig.exe > Boot tab > Advanced Options). It's probably not necessary. You might also find that slowing down the CPU too much will increase the power consumption because various components will have to be awake for longer periods to do the work. However, I always disable turbo mode when running on battery because power consumption increases substantially faster than speed (ie the line on the graph gets steeper).

Your other challenge is to minimise the unnecessary CPU activity. Try using Airplane mode to turn off the wireless devices unless you need to use them. If you do need the internet then unwanted activity can be reduced by using FlashBlock, AdBlock Plus and a Custom Hosts File. I would also emphasise that the display backlight can take more power than the CPU under light usage so get the brightness down to the minimum you can comfortably work with.

Throttlestop does work - if you go into TPL and set speedshift to 8 and8, you will limit the multiplier to 8 for al cores. This allows you to have four cores, but at a mutiplier of 8 - and dramatic power reduction. Give it a try! ( Thanks to UncleWebb!) Best, Joe

Indeed, this is probably the easier solution..

I'm pretty sure speedshift's numerical graduation does not correlate directly with the cpu multiplier and It goes from 0 to 255.
In the main window, 0 sets the maximum multiplier at all time (cpu max clock + max turbo, if turbo is enabled), 6 will set the the 6700hq at around +/- 3000mhz as the minimum and max clock + turbo as the maximum (in my experience).

It's in the TPL window, I don't think he's talking about the EPP value.

You can't limit the max clock with speedshift (unless you set the minimum at a high value in TPL, but it will affect all profiles for now), set multiplayer doesn't seem to work with this cpu, and (in my case) windows power management won't help because speedshift enabled skylake CPUs take control over power (more efficient management).

My 6700hq equipped laptop comes with a power setting that allows to lower its tdp by decreasing core clock from 2.6 to 2.1mhz, maybe you have it too (Intel thermal framework something). I did not see a big difference between 2.1 and 1.3mhz, to low is not a good idea either. Disabling turbo boost will lower consumption a lot, I also suggest you undervolt it. For some reason, this particular CPU uses a lot more voltage than needed, and from my experience and what others have experienced, it can be set at -100mV CPU/cache and lower.
(Edit: I suggest you do some research on undelvolting with throttleStop and do some testing, it's worth it)

Oh right, I was to lazy to double check if they were both using the EPP graduation. Welp never mind.

To OP: Well What I said still applies for the main window. TPL will affect all your throttleStop profile, but UncleWebb might place the setting in the main window in an upcoming build to allow different settings at different profiles.
