    memory 2r x 8 vs 2r x 16

    i have two samsung memory

    one is 1gb 2r x 16 ddr2 pc2-5300
    the other is 2gb 2r x 8 ddr2 pc2-5300

    i guess, they have different bit width?
    one is single and the other is dual

    what exactly is the difference that different bit width makes?
    will they be compatible with each other as far as working as dual channel?

    one of the memory cards has 8 memory chips the other has 16. the 1gb card has 16 64mb memory chips, the 2gb card has 8 256mb memory chips. Memory has become more dense in the past year or so, higher density memory chips are more efficient, as less chips are needed for capacity, and thus less communication is needed between the chips. You can use both in the same laptop, but they will not run dual channel because they are different capacities. Dont worry dual channel offers very little speed increases, its something like 3-5%. 3gb of memory is plenty for a laptop.
