I want to replace my sister's Samsung ativ book 7 laptop SSD with a Crucial M500 msata 480 GB SSD.

How can I migrate the preinstalled windows 8 to the new SSD?

My sister just bought this laptop used so she wants to make sure she any virus or bad malware or anything that might have been on it before. The system reset option doesn't seem to work for reason.

After migrating, she'd upgrade to windows 8.1. Would that alone clean out anything bad?

    Thanks.

No, upgrading to 8.1 with a virus/malware would not guarantee that the malware would be eradicated after upgrading.

If the reset option doesn't work; I would not be trusting that install going forward. Nor would I use this as a basis to clone to a new SSD.

Use the same version of a Windows 8 installer from a friend (or ask Geek Squad) and use the code on the machine to activate it on the new SSD. Making sure to install the drivers afterwards (and in the proper order). Now, you can upgrade this setup to Win8.1 from Windows Update (actually the Windows Store...).

    Good luck.

To migrate os from hdd to ssd you need to clone the drive with the sdd in a usb 2 or 3 drive enclosure, clean the drive up before cloning with a virus scanner,,malwarebytes finds items virus scanner missed, also use cccleaner to clean up your registry.

hang sec. Preinstalled windows 8 is a god awful minefield to migrate. Especially UEFI secure boot enabled win 8. the most reliable way I know of is using Microsoft's own shadow image copy and restore. Dont try to use 3rd party programs if u can help it because they can mess up your activation status and windows 8 can't be wasilly reactivated via phone unlike windows 7.

I migrated mine with restore partition using included samsung clone software from 750HDD to 250GB EVO with an usb 2.0 enclosure,,not even a bump, booted first time , partitions were proportionally resized. Reliable cloning software thats the bump, activation was not an issue, the win 8 was activated on first boot with the EVO also. Secure boot is M$ way to stop non M$ approved software from booting up the win 8-.1,,Secure boot can be turned off and on in the bios,, my new laptop came with secure boot off.

Samsung clone software can only be used with Samsung branded SSD, wether its limited to the new 840 series I dont know that.
