Could you please indicate (i) the make/model of notebook, (ii) what Device Manager reports as the modem hardware (and whether it shows as correctly installed), (iii) what operating system and (iv) what is listed as the modem by Control Panel.

This information will help produce more focused suggestions.

my notebook is a PACKARD BELL EASYNOTE E6310 running WINDOWS XP PRO CORPERATE in device manager the modem is listed as SMART LINK 56K MODEM
and says that it is working ok...when i go to QUERY MODEM it says that THE PORT THAT THE MODEM IS USING IS CURRENTLY IN USE BY ANOTHER APLICATION it is using PORT 3 ...location=PCI BUS 0 DEVICE 17 FUNCTION 6
i cannot find any other sevice that is using this port as it is a clean install of win xp..the only other thing it says is resource type =I/O RANGE E100-EIFF

Have you seen this web page about Smartlink support? There is a comment about the original driver not being compatible with XP SP2 and gives a link to the last driver. Worth a try? Driver problems can sometimes cause confusing messages (better than a BSOD).
