ok so I'm in Bali, Indonesia in the crazy wet season and I go to turn on my computer and it wont start! When i press the on button the lights at the front light up as long as my finger is on the button but it wont boot up! It has only been here 4 days and was working before but was kinda slow to start! I have to meet a potential client in a few days and although all my critical project files for After Effects and Premiere are on my external HD (hope that this hasnt gone the same way!) I am freaking out! Does anyone have any advice on what I can do as it is difficult to transport it to a specialist due to torrential rain storms at the moment! It has had no contact with water before anyone suggests that may be the prob but any advice would be very very much appreciated as that was the worst xmas present ever!!! And its only a month old!!!!

    What exactly is the humidity.

you tell me and I'll see if I can find some other numbers in the mean time.

From my research, it can probably withstand up to 80~85% relative humidity.

And at that humidity it would probably just degrade over time and EVENTUALLY die. It wouldn't fry the way it did...

Perhaps your monitor is broken in some way?

Besides, USUALLY when a component in a laptop is taken out or broken, it beeps and SOMETHING should show up on the screen. At least that's what I've experienced.

I've worked in some very humid conditions at various times but have never had a computer suddenly stop due to the humidity. The potentially hazardous situation is if you move a computer (or any other equipment) from a cold air-conditioned environment to a warmer and humid place so that moisture then condenses on the cold equipment. Even so, the condensation will clear once the equipment warms up.

Can you boot into the BIOS (press F2 a few times during the initial start-up)? If the screen stay blank then can you borrow and external display and plug into that? Also try switching displays (Fn+F7?). If the backlight has failed then you should be able to see a very feint image on the notebook's screen.

You can also try holding down the power button for about 10 seconds which might clear an initial bootup problem.

ok so the humidity is about 85% here at the moment - just gone and bought a load of silica gel sachets to see if that clears up the problem and dont think it is my screen but will try plugging in another screen to it to check that!! It has not been in any air con cos I am concious of moving it between enviroments like that... I have tried holding down the power button and then the light at the front wont even turn on so i have gone down to zero responsiveness but once i took the battery out and put it back in it was back to the original state of the light being on as long as my finger is on the button. will try the BIOS thing too... I hope this will work otherwise will have to try get it to a specialist but obviously its a bit sketchy over here as every second person is a 'specialist' in something or other! It will still be within its warrenty obviosuly so when i get home will there be any probs with sony replacing it do you think? thanks so much for taking the time to reply!
