    im trying to decide between two notebooks. The Dell e1505 has the256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory. the 1505 cheaper and a lot smaller. the 1705 has the 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7900 GS . it more expensive and bigger but i know for sure this card will play the games i want. is the ATi card that i have here anywhere close, better or about the same performance to the Nvidia card? Yes ive tried Toms Hardware and your GPU guide but there are so many options in the comparing card thing, i thought i would be easier to ask the experts. this decision is worth about $400

    you say that it is impossible to upgrade GPU cards... but dont laptops have a slot to add another card that outplays the original?

    The 7900 GS will blow away the x1400. Its not a question of ATI v Nvidia. It just depends on the card. The 7900 GS should be about 3x times better, maybe more, than the x1400. And I dont know what slot your talking about. If you mean an express card slot then there arent any express card GPU's, and wont be, due to bandwith...

    X1400 ~ Go 7400
    you can't compare it to a 7900GS
    it's not the matter of brand or something

    The X1400 is a 128bit card, but, still it's just no comparison, they are just not in the same class of card.

    7900GS = 20 PSUs, 7 vertex units, 12 ROPs, 256 bit mem (375/500) SM3 [A]
    x1600 = 12 PSUs, 5 vertex units, 4 ROPs, 128 bit mem (470/470) SM3 [C]
    x1400 = 4 PSUs, 2 vertex units, 4 ROPs, 128 bit mem (432/400) SM3

    X1600 is good midrange card.

    I've seen E1705 with the 7900GS and some ram using coupons get into the $1500 range or so.

    The highest card offered on HPs Pavilions are nVidia 7600GO cards.

    Not as good as the 7900, but still a good card that will play games.

    In another thread, gatordude gave you the best choice for your $1300 budget, the asus s96j. You can get one with the ati x1600, c2d t5500, 1gig ram, and a 100 gig hdd for under $1300 before tax and shipping.

    Configure one at
    powernotebooks
    bto tech
    milestone pc

    Or if you really want a 7900gs then look for one on dell's outlet. I haven't seen any good deals on the e1705 for a few weeks, so it might be a while before you find one with a 7900gs for under $1300.

    Dude, don't break your bank just for video games...
