i was thinking about getting this. i want something that's got a good amount of space (that 320gb is good for me), but is also small and portable. would that WD drive be a good choice? i'd be using it with my laptop. would i be able to watch movies and listen to music stored on this easily? or would it be too slow??

    what would you recommend?

    anyone got any advice?

i also forgot to mention in my original post, that i will be moving from UK to Canada soon, so power supply is an issue as well. thats why the WD passport one looks good, it runs off USB

Yes, for a portable notebook size HD that needs no power supply, the Passport is a good choice. I have that drive, 320GB, and it works fine. It is not as fast as the large external drives with desktpp drives inside, that require a power supply, but you would probably find it quite sufficient for your uses.

There are many other brands too, of the small USB-powered type, probably just as good, but I cannot compare them. I have a Passport, and it works fine, seems durable, looks good, etc.

In fact, it now comes in a size still larger--500GB. If I were buying one now, I'd go for the larger one. Shop around for price, as you will find that the same HDD can be priced very differently at different vendors, at least here in the USA. Ebay is a possiblity as well.

Thanks a ton for your advice maiki.

Is it possible to watch movies from the hard drive without a problem as well?

Well, you could plug in any external HDD and put movies on it and/or watch movies that are on it. What do you mean by "Without a problem'? Anyway, that looks like a good external HDD to me.

buy an ecnlosure you like and buy a good harddrive. IE, get a HITACHI drive.

I made my own external enclosure out of perforated stainless steel, and it houses my Hitachi 1TB ultrastar and two 80mm fans.

was just worried about latency or speed issues really? i'm not massive into this sort of thing, so i was wondering whether there would be slight speed issues when dealing with a USB hard drive. apparently not though?
