i have 1 ethernet outlet in my dorm room, and i have two computers. i don't know much about networking, but i believe i need an internet/ethernet hub. i'm not sure what its called exactly

can anyone give me recommendations on what i should buy? preferably something that is 4-8 slot and is cheaper than $30. i searched newegg for a hub, but all it showed me was USB hubs (which i dont need)

    thanks!

You need an ethernet "router". You may as well get a wireless router with a few 10/100 ethernet ports. You can use the ehternet cable ports or use wifi if you like. They are really inexpensive nowadays. Some routers also have printer ports so that you can share a printer.

is there a place i could get one for a wired connection? just the simple multiple wired connections, not the fancy printer stuff

either a hub or a router will work since the "real" routing table is on the school's main router(s).

a hub (a switch would be better) will be easier to use since you just plug in and go.

a router will require some setup (unless you just leave the default settings which may cause conflicts on the LAN), but if it has wifi, then you'll be able to get wifi.

note that plugging either a hub or a router into the school's network may violate the school's TOS for a myriad of reasons.

you dont want a router or a hub, you want a switch. btw, i wouldnt go with that brand. get a linksys or dlink switch.

for most schools it is against their policy to add a router on the network btw.

i have personally implemented the linksys one, and it is built like a rock (all metal casing), but id go with the dlink because of price.
