The sockets are compatible with the non-Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo notebooks.
However, you should find a BIOS upgrade for your laptop that supports Core 2 Duo.

The Core 2 Duos that are compatible with your system are:

    T5300
    T5500
    T5600
    T7200
    T7400
    T7600

The Core 2 Duo was meant to be a "drop-in" sort of upgrade from the Core Duo. All you need, as mujtaba said, is a driver/BIOS refresh in some cases to make sure the system recognizes the Core 2 Duo.

I would highly recommend the T7200 if you plan on upgrading. It's the best "bang-for-buck" processor.

Make sure you do not replace your processor with the following Core 2 Duos, because these following Core 2 Duos will not be compatible with your system:

    T7100
    T7300
    T7500
    T7700
