Got my new hard drives and Windows 64 in today. Installed the hard drives and am trying to install the new 64bit Vista OS. Keep getting a message that windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation.

When I reboot the computer and go into the setup, it recognizes 2 Fujitsu 120GB hard drives.

    What am I missing here?

No, there are no jumpers on the drives in any case.

I re-installed my original 5400 drive back in it and booted the computer. The 2nd drive is one of the new 7200 Fujitsu's and when I explore "My Computer" it doesn't see it either.

See whether another version of Windows can recognize the disk.

Thanks, but that doesn't explain why the computer sees the hard drive in the setup screen but doesn't see it when I try to "explore" to it from My Computer.

Good page though and I'll search there some more.

I don't have a clean install disk (or any other disk for that matter) of Windows here with me.

No luck on that site at all. Any other suggestions or should I just assume my Toshiba can't use these hard drives? I did verify that they are serial ATA and was told I wouldn't have any problems with them. Right now I'd be happy if I could just get the thing recognized so I could copy my 32 bit vista from the existing hard drive onto the new one.

You need to format that disk space, or if there is a partition on it, delete it,and make it into a usable space.
I reinstalled vista 2 days ago,and vista simply could not install on my former partition.
So I deleted it, formated the new one into a whole new partition and smooth sail after that.
If I got the message right :D

Forget "explore" go to "Device Manager" what does it say there? Or do something I have never done. Go to Control Panel, Add Hardware? ;)

Ok, after a long night of messing with this thing, here is where I'm at:

Both hard drives are installed and formatted. I was able to install the 64 bit Vista but when I booted it the computer no longer recognized the 8700M video card, the finger print scanner and I'm sure some other stuff that I didn't really notice. I tried backing up the original 32 bit Vista OS and then using the Toshiba Recovery disks to "restore" the original OS and settings to one of the new hard drives but got an error message that wouldn't let me do so.

I'm at wits end here...........I'm going to do yet another online search and see how I can get the 64 bit OS to "recognize" the installed hardware on the computer and then try to upload the drivers from my recovery disks. Failing that.............I'm out of ideas.

Does anyone know exactly what I need to do after the clean install to get the video card and other hardware recognized and installed so I can use it?

I tried "add new hardware" but the OS merely came back with a message that "no new hardware was found".

Normally any unformatted disc is recognized during the installation - at least Windows should detect them and offer you to format them with either NTFS or FAT filesystem.

If you previously used the backup installation disc or recovery function of your notebook it could be that you miss a driver.

I havea FSC3438 with built-in raid - my FSC recovery discs was shipped with that driver for the raid controller a generic Vista CD I bought did not recognize them so I had to prepare a driver on a USB flash stick to add during installation.

Use Device manager over install new hardware. Sounds like driver issues to me? Get the drivers you should be fine?

I'm on the Toshiba Europe website down loading a boat load of x64 drivers right now, I'll try that once it's done.

The new disks are in and recognized, the x64 Vista is installed. The issues I'm having now are simply that my computer is not recognizing the 8700M video card, the finger print reader and probably others though I'll concede that I haven't dug past those two issues since they are the most immediately apparent.

    Me again...............

Ok, so I was able to get 64 installed, both new hard drives recognized and even got the 8700M recognized and operating. Here's the issue now.

My network controller isn't being seen and it won't let me install any drivers, it also won't allow me to install new hardware and get it in there that way. My wireless card is seen and shows a valid driver installed, but when I try to use it I get nothing, and when I try to install the correct (per Toshiba anyway) driver for it I get "Error 31" and driver not installed. On boot I get "fingerprint scanner" not installed even though Protector Suite is installed and I have the valid drivers on the machine.

I even tried giving up on Vista 64 and cloning my existing hard drive to one of the new ones using a program called "self image" but am getting the error message that I can't write to the drive. I went in through the "computer" section, selected properties and security settings and gave all users "full" permission but that didn't help. The drive is formatted and empty. I don't know nearly enough about computers to get around this issue and searching the web via google has not been productive.

    Anyone???

    Thanks!!!!
