I have a 1420 and just bought an external HD,simpletech 250gb. The plan was to use the external for a music library because I was trying to avoid slowing down the laptop with a couple of thousand songs and all my pictures. I have got songs on ext. but it keeps going on to my computer. If i uninstall from comp. The HD only shows the installation file. If I install it to the ext HD, it also installs on the computer. Is there any way to just install to ext, HD. ? Help please

You need to disable copying to your library within iTunes preferences. You can keep the actual iTunes catalog on your laptop though, it will simply reference the locations of your external music / video.

Tools>Preferences>Advanced and click the Change button under the General tab to change the folder to which iTunes copies your music files.

Thanks for the help. I cant seem to keep songs from loading on both computer and ext,HD. I tried to uninstall itunes from computer , but then I get an error message when I try to open itunes on external HD. I`m going up to the apple store and let them figure it out.
    Thanks again
