Hi the HDD on my DELL E6400 just failed (a few days after the 3 years warranty expired!!), so I need to buy a new one.
The failed drive is a seagate momentus 5400.4 250GB
I was wondering if anyone would be able to suggest a new drive. I need something basic and not expensive as I'll be using this machine very sporadically, so not very interested in performance/noise, while reliability is still important of course. 250GB more than enough for what I need, actually even a smaller one would be OK if it is cheaper. If anyone could also provide a link where I can buy a new hdd at a good price, that would be great. I live in the UK.

sorry if this is a very naive question, but I would not really know what drive I have to buy at the moment, or where it would be convenient to buy from. thanks

If it's only a few days (say a week or less) after the warranty expired, it might be worth a call to Dell to see if they'll take pity on you and replace it.

You need a SATA hard drive. If you don't care about performance a 160GB of 256GB 5400RPM drive is probably your cheapest option.

The Dell E6400 uses the SATA interface, so I'd recommend that you buy a retail HDD that is 2.5 inch (notebook-size). A place that you can choose to buy is from Amazon (they ship within UK).

Here are a few SATA drives that are produced by their respective manufacturer; there are others, but I can't list them all:

    Western Digital ( here)
    Seagate ( here)
    Intel SSDs ( here)

The original specification sheet for the Dell E6400 can be found here for reference.
