after much looking i've not found an honest answer. looking for small netbook like eg acer one 150 with option to use at home on external monitor. screen resolution is given as 1024 x 600. can any netbooks display a higher res on an external monitor?

Depending on the output. VGA can go up to around 2048x1536 or so. Internal resolution has nothing to do with it's external output.

The video card on the laptop will affect the resolution though. It should be able to do better than the laptop screen.

here is an example of one that is higher on an external monitor...
