    Hey guys
just bought a scorpio black 320 gb notebook hdd.
Pleased with it so far, but I hear a click or two every once and a while. They are very faint but distinct from what I assume to be normal whirring.

I ran some hdd diagnostic tests (seagates since wd seems to have issues) and my hdd passes all of them

Its kind of driving me mad since its a brand new drive, I'd hate to have gotten a lemon.

Any tips would be great, thanks

When its idle the hard drive parks the reading head to a safe position

If its doing it excessively then you should get it exchanged.

Many of the reviews on newegg mention the same thing. It may have something to do with the drive parking it's heads when idle, or perhaps something to do with the free-fall sensor?

Either way, many report it as normal.

wow you guys are excellent with the responses.
Yea i usually hear it when nothing is going on which I found really weird and scary.

I hope its just normal like everyone says. I hope this drive can last me at least 2 more years :)

    Thanks guys

it's because the APM feature (parking)
Try quietHDD or hdparm to set higher number for APM or disable it :)

My new 5000BEVT is a tick noiser from the heads parking than the old one it replaced--which was practically silent. I'll have to take a look at that utility.

I listened to that sound-the pitch on mine is lower, it's not quite as pronounced-but it's there alright!

EDIT: I just did some reading on the site here and someone attributed the extra noise to XP's Indexing Service. I just disabled indexing on both partitions, so I'll see if that make the drive any quieter.
