ok i think i can safely say these burners will work with my laptop, as they are listed under the service tag for my dell, and hopefully dell might exchange the tsst for one of these:

    HLDS GSA-T21N
    OPTIARC AD-5560A
    Pioneer DVR-K17YA

    which ones the best?

If you're replacing this under warranty or something of the sort, I highly doubt Dell will let you choose the part. Honestly, I highly doubt you'll notice any difference between the three; they're all DVD burners and they'll all burn DVDs.

Optiarc seems to be more ubiquitous than the rest, but that doesn't mean it's any better.

Pioneer drives in my opinion are the best in both desktops and laptops. I have two pioneer blu-ray drives in my laptop and they are amazing, they burn dvds and everything. I am happy I made the decision to go blu-ray over hddvd.
