not really a laptop question but i think the principle still applys. just getting a new desktop system which will come with 1gb of ddr2 667mhz memory.
in my current desktop ive got 1 gb of ddr 400mhz memory is it worth putting the old memory in with the new ( i suspect the new memory will only run at 400mhz if i do),
so the question is is 2gb running at 400mhz better than 1 gb running at 667mhz ? any help or suggestions would be appreciated

You're right, the 667mhz will indeed run at 400mhz. Still, 2Gb 400mhz should be better than 1Gb mhz. Beside, given desktop ram's low price, you can buy a new 1Gb 667mhz for a really cheap price and thus have 2 x 1Gb 667mhz and chunk the old 400mhz

You say your old RAM is DDR and the new RAM will be DDR2. You can't mix DDR and DDR2 memory which, I think, solves your dilemma.

I'm not sure you can mix ddr and ddr2.

If the new computer is running DDR2 memory, then it probably will not support the old DDR memory. They use different slots.
