new upgrade options for dv7-3065dx

can anyone tell me the upgrade options for this computer like harddrive processor wireless please

Well you can up the mem to 8gigs, but you'll need to run the 64bit version of Win 7.

It appears that you can replace your 2.4Mhz m600 with the m660 which runs at 2.7Mhz.

As for HDD, you could replace your 500GB with a 640GB, but I dunno if you can add a second drive.

 

I don't know about the CPU but M600 should be the best one... As for GPU , no upgrade... for mem , 8GB is possible but to use it u need a 64 bit version of windows... u can upgrade the 500GB drive to a 640GB one but i would recommend u stick with the 500GB one as it might be 7200rpm while the 640 one is 5400rpm... Your Dv7t supports 2 hard drives so if u get another hard drive caddy from ebay , u can install another 500GB one... and u could also install a blue ray drive.

 

I would not recommend any 640GB HD's right now as an 'upgrade' - they are simply too slow for a boot/OS usage. Even the 500GB Scorpio Blue is noticeably faster.

As a second HD strictly for Data storage? Why not! But it will still make the system feel sluggish comparatively (with/without). Also, note that you may need to buy/order the proper connectors and wiring (and also get those installed somehow) for the second HD if the notebook does not have them already (they don't by default - cheap manufacturers).

For the price/level of this notebook, I would say sell and buy a higher end model - most efficient and least costly 'upgrade' possible for most people, in terms of time and money spent.

Stick to an Intel platform for most performance and definitely look towards the new i3, i5 and i7 (in increasing performance order) platforms.

More RAM will not make your computer faster, although it will allow you to do more work and you already have a 7200 RPM HD; but spending almost the same amount of money that the notebook is worth for the best current SSD (Intel G2 160GB) is not a wise move for that platform.

this is what i have done so far;

put my hitacvhi 320 n the second bay after i obtained a hdd caddy to use for storage

nothingelse has been done as of yet. i just bought this computer about two weeks ago

im gonna be looking for a 500 to put n that second bay if needed

what are the options for a slot load blue ray, im just curious to know if its possiable

Slot loading, if I remember correctly. Studio 1535s come with that drive.

well my laptop uses the older 5500 and since the Dv5 and 7 look the same , the newer 5600 should work... i'm not 100% sure... post in the Hp forum and ask there... and plz try not to be rude... we are trying our best to help.

can u tell us what DVD drive u have now so we can see if its slot loaded or tray loaded?

 

the current one i have now is a tray load. i know u suggested a Sony Optitrac BC-5600S which is a slot load
i did look that one up but havent decided yet especially knowing that some of them do jam so that part of i havent decided yet
i wish i could put a wireless n card with bluetooth in,but i havent found anything yet

 

I'm just curious... Why the need for a card that combines wireless N with Bluetooth? I know Broadcom makes such a chipset for the iphone, but finding this combo in a mini card for your lappy on the open market may not be possible.

 

If i remember correctly , there is such a card and it available but i can't remember the name... i would just buy a wireless-N card and bluetooth stick module seperately...

Well I think that would be the Broadcom BCM943225HMB. It's available from Dell .

 

i dont guess they make a internal card like that for mine only option i have is a pci card

my bad that is the internal one i found it on hp s website but it has no bluetooth but thats no biggie

it should be strainghtforward... just turn over u laptop and open 2 screws to access Mini PCI-e Slot ... its in the middle collum to the bottom of ram slot... jump in... it will work... if doesn't just return it.... but wait oops... just realised... hp blacklists wireless cards so u need to get one of ebay for hp... like Intel 5100AGN... try a 5300AGN.. it might work but 5100 will work for sure but 5300 is better... up to u but remember to get a hp version of 5100 or 5300.

 

hp shows a wireless n mini pci card on their website. are the ones on the website blacklisted as well and i know this is a stupid question but what does blacklist mean?

In this case, your computer being "AMD" will have no bearing on it's compatability with the Intel card. It's a bios level thing. As for the "blacklisting", HP is simply trying to force people to buy aftermarket upgrades directly from HP and limits support in the bios. I pulled a wireless card from a Compaq V5000 and threw it into a Gateway 450ROG and it worked fine (ok granted that's going from an HP product to someone else's, but you get the idea).

Installing the card is a tad more complicated than tossing it in. There are two antenna wires that have to be connected correctly to the card after it's been seated in the slot. Make sure the card is recognized in the bios, then boot into Windows. If it's blaclisted you'll see this: "104 UNSUPPORTED WIRELESS NETWORK DEVICE DETECTED", and as far as I know there is no workaround.

I had the Gateway hardwired to my router so windows could download and install the necessary drivers when it detected the new hardware.

BTW, did I miss something? The Dell unit I mentioned was the same as the one from HP but included the bluetooth, so I'm inclined to think it should work, and it's the same price as the Intel off eBay. Did you try contacting HP and asking if it would work?

 

i did call hp and a intel card will not work with a amd lappy but that could be because they want me to buy it from them its not that big of a price difference between the ones on ebay and the one they have

Ok I'm confused at what you're asking...

Are you asking about what wireless card is in your notebook or are you asking about a future wireless card you want to put in your notebook?

Is your internet connection speed strong enough to benefit from wireless N? Currently, very few so-called "high speed" internet connections are speedy enough to be bottlenecked by a wireless G network.

Anyhow, that aside, I'd check 2 things:
- the whitelisting on HP's mPCIe
- the chipset compatibility

Perhaps ask in the wireless subforum though, maybe they'd know by-heart what can go into your machine >.>

hitachi travel star 7200 500gig hdd has been ordered but not installed yet
wireless n mini pci express card has been ordered and installed and i have noticed a speed increase over the wireless g that was n the laptop i have also purchased the adp for it
incase anyone cares i am enrolling in itt techs i t program so maybe i will learn something more than what i have here

How many minipcie slots does the dv7 have?
If there are 2 (1 for wifi card) you can make a DIY Internal usb hub
(put in flashdisk, gps, bluetooth, anything there)
or does it have option for minipcie TV tuner ?

That doesn't help... getting a new wireless card , bluetooth card or USB stick is the only other upgrade u can do... you can get a CPU upgrade to M670 which is 0.3GHz faster than M600 and IMO its not worth it and its gonna be hard to get as M670 is quite new.

If you want to increase your boot times drop an SSD in as your primary drive. This will also increase your HDD Windows Experience Index score. I have a Corsair Nova V64 in my DV7-3065DX and am using OCZ in my desktops.
Move your 500GB HDD to the second drive bay (you will need to get a caddy with adapter from ebay).
