Can I play games that run only on desktop resolutions on widescreen laptops? I understand pixels can blend to attain a non-native, i.e., desktop resolution. But how is the picture quality? Will there be blank strips on both sides of the widescreen when running at desktop res? Thanks in advance.

Yes there's an option either for Windows or the software for you GPU to allow "stretching" of the desktop or non-naive resolution to fit your laptop widescreen or to allow the black bar strips.

For example, I play WC3 on a non-native resolution (1024x768) and it looks fine on my laptop's screen, which is 1280x800.

WC3 does not have a default option for 1280x800. You can edit a registry entry to force it to 1280x800, but then it looks really crappy.

Yes I agreee with Gator, for games using a 1024x768 resolution I just stretch it to 1280x800 however some games do look decent and sometimes have a 1280x800 option but they are never optimized for it :(
