Hi, currently I have a lapto pwith a 120Hz screen and I love it. I just wonder if I could use a non 120Hz laptop, connect a 120Hz screen and have the advantage of 120Hz ? Do I need a GPU which supports 120 Hz ?

    Thanks

The graphics chip has to support it (not using optimus) and the motherboard must support the 50pin display cable.

I believe he means check the specification of the card.

Many times graphics cards can support displays beyond the one supplied with the laptop, such as higher resolutions, 3D and or 120Hz. Which would allow you to do exactly what it is you're trying to do.

Systems with Optimus system won't support 120hz, also it needs an eDP connector as that is the used by the 3D screen in your P170HM3.

@Prema: My idea was to sell the Clevo and buy some 15" laptop which I could use with an external 120Hz screen (and also make use of the 120Hz).

However, most laptops I have been looking at habe the optimus technology (so they can switch back to the intel graphics to save battery). E.g. Levono IdeaPad Y580 ?

Technically your best bet is a P150HM or 16F2 or GT683R machine in that case.
