i have a old athlon 64 3200+ 2gb 5200fx winxp desktop and it using it feels way faster than my new laptop which has centrino dua 5750 2ghz, 4gb, hd3650 vista64. when i made the transition i was thinking the new laptop would feel really responsive and fast with the dual core and stuffs but things load faster on my oldcomputer and it generally feels snappier why is that?

You didnt say your hard drive...did you fresh install windows yourself or did you leave it the way it came from factory. Also a 2ghz core 2 duo isnt very fast...mine runs at 3.8ghz.

Load times are 90% determined by the Hard Drive. your desktop likely had a decent 7200 RPM HDD with fast seek times and latencies, while your laptop drive is likely 5400 RPM with slower seek times and latencies. That would be my guess at least. 2GHz core 2 is plenty fast enough for most applications.

One other aspect: a 3.2 GHz processor is WAY better than a 2.0 GHz dual-core if you're using a single application, as most often you are (can you do word processing AND browse the web at the same time?). Dual core 2.0 GHz is NOT the same as single-core 4.0 GHz.

While a faster process will make things a little bit snappier, The OP's issues with load times are going to be based off his HDD. He moved from a desktop to a laptop and is concerned of load times, all signs point to a slower HDD in by book.

yea its 7200rpm in old pc and new laptop has 5400rpm but like in general the old whole system feels more responsive and snappy. tho the new laptop is technically faster it doesnt feel faster overall when using windows. i was expecting to "feel" the "upgrade" but it feels quite a bit slower.

Na XP is no good anymore, especially if your running 4GB and 64-bit. Nobody wants to mess with XP 64. Make sure your running SP1 of Vista and that all your drivers are current. The Core 2 architecture is far better than that of the AM2. Also use msconfig to disable anything you don't need running. If your using any anti-virus, anti-spyware besides AVG and avast, I'd recommend removing it and run nothing or those two I just said. Make sure your power profile is set to High Performance instead of Balanced.

That's not relevant, it has a different architecture.

Same like a Celeron 3.06GHz and a Athlon 64 4000+. The Celeron runs on a higher clockspeed but the Athlon is faster.

i got rid of the random stuff on vista and i have only few stuff runin its trim, but still my old pc felt way faster. like i wouldve expected multi tasking to feel faster since its a core 2 duo and everyone is like two cores wow feel the power! but multitasking doesnt feel much different from my old pc

Its really because of the hard drive...get the 320gb 7200rpm laptop drive and it should be close to the speed of your old hard drive.

i dont think its just the hardrive cuz i barely ever see the symbol for it being used flashing and hardly hear it crunching. im not talking about strictly load times but overall windows responsiveness, like mutlitasking feels the same on both the machines but the laptop has dual core so i was expecting a snappier feeling on it
