ok well i get my notebook up and going with xp to start with and have temperature monitors on it...

atm... i dont have a notebook cooler, but was wondering...

it read my 80 gig 7200RPM HDD at around 60C thats while under partial load...

would this worry you? Notebook Hardware COntrol keeps poping up telling me the temp is Higher or equal to 60C....60-63C under full load

CPU running at around 46-50C and Graphics cars around 52 while at rest!

    thanks for the help

Yes, ~60C HDD temperature is undesirably hot. Most notebook HDDs have a maximum rated operating temperature of 55C. Prolonged operation above this temperature may shorten its life.

The only time I have seen similar temperatures are in the Dell Inspiron 8000 (where the HDD was next to the CPU).

What notebook are you measuring this temperature in and is the HDD near any of the heat-generating components?

Is anything causing high HDD utilisation?

im using my Sager5791 that i just got today..

yes... i was putting it under stress by basically encoding a game (take 7 1 gig files on the HDD and converting them into a large 7 GIG file)

so yea... i was reading and write onto the HDD and it was getting a max of 61... i never saw 62C..... i know a notebook cooler will help though.

do you think for the stress i put it under that it will be ok... im not worried about the HDD itself.. im worried that ill be playing a game and it will heat up causing other more costly components to heatup to unsafe conditions.

i dont mind lower HDD life.. if i can get 1 year or 2 out of it thats ok, just worried about the other stuff ;)

EDIT: ALso i was browsing the internet and listening to MUsic which was saved on the HDD...lol.

OK. Time to update your signature.

The HDD won't create enough heat (3 to 4W) to cause heating of other components. They only tend to get warm because they are usually in their own compartment with no cooling. The coolest HDD I've had in recent years was in a Sony SZ where one of the cooling air intakes was in the HDD compartment so the fan blowing out hot air kept the HDD cool.

Your encoding test is probably quite severe since it involves simultaneous read and write. I doubt if gaming will give the HDD such a hard time. Just keep an eye on the HDD temperature under normal usage.

NHC always says my HD is at 32F. Point is, the temps NHC reports may not be accurate, it could be something else, or nothing at all.

my GPU sits around 62C maxing so far at 67C and my HD stays a constant 56C while playing... so i think im ok :)
