i was wondernig if you can order a notebook with dual hard drives at 5400 rpm and then later upgrade them with 2 x 7200rpm hard drives. for istance on hp dv8000 they have 2x120gb (240gb) hard drives running at 54000rpm and only have the option of 1x100gb hard drive running at 7200rpm. why dont they have an option where you can get 2 hard drives both running at 7200rpm?

Alienware has some laptops that have dual hard drives both running at 7200. They also have an SLI notebook with 2x 7900GS in it. Yes it is a very very expensive notebook, but you could get one with 2 harddrives for a reasonable price if you got the lower stuff in it.

You want a slim laptop? Heat and power is another issue. We are already getting at most 3 hours with 1 HD, imagine 2, it would be a battery drainer.

Not sure why they don't offer dual 100GB 7200RPM's as an option, but nothing is stopping you from slapping in another aftermarket. I personally would have a 7200RPM drive as the primary drive with Windows and your apps on it, then get a larger (120GB) drive for storage and such. Just in case you're wondering, the HP dv8000t is not RAID-capable.

The only reason that there are 2 hard drives in a notebook is for RAID. Alienware does it so you can have RAID 0 for extra performance. A buisness one would use it for the protection of RAID 1. You could seperate them like that Chaz, but if I had 2 I would have them in RAID 0.

Why would you want 2 hard drives, theres absolutly no reason. If you want more storage buy a 120 gig hd or something bigger. Dont drain your battery for nothing. Or you can buy an external hard drive. I upgraded my crappy 5400 rpm 60 gig stock hard drive with an 80 gig 7200 rpm hitachi, its fast, fairly silent, and keeps even cooler. I bought a 9 dollar notebook hard drive enclosure for my old 5400 60 gig. Now i have an external drive.

i dont think that you can have raid with 1 internal and 1 external drive ,cause you dont have the raid controler in your laptop .
and if your able to it would only be usefull for raid 1 (protection) cause the speed of bout drives are different and you wont be able to make any speed gains.

Of course, many laptops already support 2 hard drives. For me, i prefer to use a external hd as a storage rather than put a 2nd hd inside. Probably, the battery consumption is much and i never save many data to a internal hd in desktop or laptop. If save many data to a hd, i like to use a external hd, at least, i can move the external hd to another machine to retrieve the data.
    Cheers

well i wanted two hard drives because external hard drives have a bad reputation for reliablity. I dont want to use something that is a ticking time bomb waiting to happen.
