    I've been messing around with my OC'ing, underclocking and temps.

    what I've found is that over three different games, underclocking my CPU from 2.8 turbo to 2.1 gives a huge temp decrease and little performance difference.

    I combined this with overclocking my GPU at the same time. The GPU and CPU are usually share the one piece of copper so less heat on GPU without modifying its clocks.

    3dmark11 scores=
    2.8ghz CPU turbo-450/800 GPU= 899 marks
    TEMPS = 61/57 cpu - 66 gpu

    2.1ghz CPU-450/800 GPU = 892 marks
    TEMPS = 49/43 cpu - 60-61 gpu

    10 degree drop for the CPU and 4-6 degree drop on the GPU. in games I just overclocked the card and it more than made up for the deficit. last remnant played on my external monitor @1440x900 on high settings - except shadows - with the 2.1ghz setting. Obviously on emulators, there's a noticeable performance decrease as it utilizes the cpu much more.

    this is purely because ppl keep saying oc'ng on laptops is dangerous, so hopefully this'll make it a bit cooler and safer.

    I used throttlestop to limit the max multiplier and max tcp.

    regards alex

    So...what was the temperature difference when you OC'd the GPU?

    I just re-read my post, the 60-61 was the OC'd temps, at stock I was getting 58C under load, with an OC of 620/1070 it would go up 3-4C over stock clocks. of course temps differ by game, so for instance hydrophobia may go up to 67 on OC, just because it heats up my graphics card more, even though it looks like crap. Bulletstorm, the last remnant and grid all run much cooler with little to no performance drop on the downclocked cpu.

    whatever you do you'll lose temps on the graphics card if you downclock your CPU, because removing the turbo mode on my cpu removes 4 watts as well as 300mhz, hence the huge temp decrease as well. so you can imagine what you lose when downclocking to 2.1ghz from turbo.

    results will differ from laptop to laptop, but I think it gives more opportunity for those who are too scared or limited by poor cooling to OC their graphics cards... another reason why PC's are better than consoles... there's always an alternative or workaround :) wish I could've done this on my 3 dead 360's

    UC'd cpu/OC'd gpu. TEMPS=48/43cpu-61gpu

    cpu full speed/OC'd gpu. TEMPS=57/53-67gpu
    http://3dmark.com/3dm11/1784952?show_ads=true&page=/3dm11/1784952?key=VeUjEMVmDtYZeyzpU6Nq6aWh8ZWayR

    14 marks difference, and its the same at stock gpu speeds. the full speed run ran actually not too bad but still 9C on the fastest core and the gpu was 5 degrees hotter for 14 marks. this isn't a real world test and in real world tests the performance gap is bigger but not by much. the cpu/physics score is 200 points difference, so in games it may make a difference but not much, obviously depending on if its cpu dependant or not.

    My temps are ridiculously low, because I have an external cooler I made up but, you should still get significant temp drops by dong this

    bump for edit

    I just noticed your laptop spec and wow, you've really got alot of room for setting different cpu profiles because of the bigger frequencies and faster cpu, if you downclocked to 2.1ghz (just for arguments sake), you could lose up to 15C off the cpu at a guess, and whatever off the GPU
