so i picked up this older HP laptop that uses socket 478 mPGA processors in it and it came with a p4 2.80ghz Northwood and it runs pretty hot already.
I was wondering if I should put in my 3.2ghz Prescott with HT?
I know it's gonna get even hotter, but i'll benefit from the 800mhz fsb compared to the 533 on the northwood.
or i can get a 3.4ghz northwood w/ HT on ebay for about 60 bucks?
Does the L2 cache make that big a difference between Prescott and Northwood?

hmm, i've taken out my laptop's processor b4... i checked ebay and i found that a reasonable upgrade would have cost me 300 US dollars...
forget that!!!
if it only costs you 60 dollars then i would say go ahead!
on second thought.... 3.4 ghz pentium 4 in a laptop....
forget that!!!!!!
pentium 4's score really low in cpu benchmarks...
a decent mobile c2d scores 2500
a low end scores 1200
and pentium dual core scores 1000
a pentium 4 scores 350
and high end p4 scores 400......
youre not gonna get far with a pentium 4, even at disturbing clocks (for a laptop) -
Prescott? wasn't that a desktop core?
if it's 5 bucks I'd put in the 3.4ghz. but that's IT!!
it not worth the upgrade at all. -
Throw your laptop away.. it is so old and pentium 4 laptops are crappier than my old Pentium M Latitude D600.. you should nver have bought this laptop in the first place..
