Any estimation on how much this may improve performance. The fan no longer works as efficient.

If you have dust in your heatsink and fan it is a good thing to do.
Have you ever cleaned it before? If not then it would be a good idea to blow it out with an air compressor or caned air.

i don't know much about laptops but i am an electronics engineer. Just be careful not to put too much air pressure on electronic components when cleaning them.

You should never blow compressed air at yourself (disclaimer).........but i normally blow it onto my hand and if it hurts i turn the pressure down until it's tolerable for a short period without hurting. I find this has never damaged anything i've worked on, but i have seen components dislodged by collegues using too much air pressure.

The best way is to stick a toothpick into the vent and between the fan blades. This will stop teh fan from revolving when you spray the compressed air onto the fan. This will keep the fan stationary and will force all of the dust off of the blades of the fan. If you do not do this, the pressure of the air could cause the fan to revolve so fast that the bearings may come out of their sleeves, and cuase the fan to fail or make noises.

Cleaning the fans is a good idea, and will keep your system running cooler.
