Samsung's HDDs run cool and quiet but performance is usually just behind Hitachi and Seagate.
There was a firmware bug which meant that the HM250JI had poor data transfer rates with the Intel 945 chipset. Aside from that they seem to be quite reliable.

I've been using Samsung Spinpoint drives for awhile now and have no complaints of them, nor has any ever went bad on me (yet).

Samsung is the largest consumer electronics company in the world. The 2nd largest semi-cunducter MFG behind Intel in the world. They produce more RAM than any other company in the world. They make a lot of high def screens. Hitachi and Seagate might be a little better (faster) but by no means is Samsung anything other than a top notch Co. If I found a good price I would buy!

In my opinion that says anything about the quality of their harddisks.
Samsung is the largest manyfacturer of LCD TV's, still if you want a well built, durable TV I would never recommend Samsung. Yes they are cheap and deliver great performance for the price, but durable.. imo no.
I hope their harddisks are better, and based on the reports I have read, they are. -
They make the only available hybrid drive, so I hope they're good....especially if I buy one.
-
The current generation hybrid drives by Samsung are performing mediocre, so better stay away from them.

I've got a couple of Samsung (desktop) harddrives, so far, I can't really complain about the reliability. (I had one die on me, but it was an ancient 60GB disk. Must have been 5 years old or something. The other 2 are working great)
Seagate, on the other hand... I've had insane failure rates with those.... -

Samsung hybrid drives are outperformed by many 'normal' 5400rpm drives. -

I have a Samsung 80GB 5400RPM SATA drive in my Sager. I would say it is a mid-grade drive with good reliability; I have been using it for two years with no problems.
Not as nice as a Western Digital though. -
I started using Samsung drives a few years back only because they were cheap replacements/upgrades in older computers. They have stood up well under years of use, even if they are not quite the fastest general-use drives on the market (a title which was once held by Maxtor).
