Macbooks have a very good display panel and I fell in love with it the first time I saw it.

Other than buying one, are there other laptops that have a similar or even superior screen?

    Thanks.

Sony Vaio Z/S models. Apple's panels are just bright. It makes them look better than they are. Try a 1920x1080 13.3" panel on a Vaio Z, or a 1600x900 panel on a 13.3" Vaio S. They're pretty darn nice.

Brightness wise, I'm not sure though.

Look for anything with a 8 bit TN panel or IPS display and you'll be good. I've read that Alienware uses good screens on their gaming notebooks.

The MBP just uses an AUO 8 bit TN panel if memory serves.

The 1920x1200 RGB LED panel in the M17x R2 is great, plus if you get rid of the glossy E2E plexy the screen itself is matte, all you have to do is make a bezel.

As katalin said, the M17x R2 has one of the best screens available in the laptop world.

M17x R2 is out of production now so you will have to resort to other models.

The new AW models are WLED screens. I think you could consider a laptop with an IPS screen (HP elite, Dell vostro) etc if you are not looking for chassi design.
