whenever i run my laptop sitting on my bed it gets incredibly hot almost scortching hot, its because the sheet and bed is blocking the vent on the side. I do not do this now but i wonder if i have done damage, is there any way to find out? if there was damage would tests liek 3dmark06 be lowered?

also what is a good program to monitor the CPU and GPU heat. thanks.

Blocking the vents is definately bad. As a failsafe measure, it will shutdown or restart if it gets too hot.

    http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

Monitors CPU GPU and HDD temps and peak temps. You dont even have to install it. Also i believe theres a way to make it run on startup, just not sure how

overheating will not cause any damage as when it reaches the damaging temp system automatically shuts down.........AFAIK i dont know abt any long term damage due to overheating for processors......however the battery wear will increase dramatically on overheating (i had experience)........use everest to monitor these values........ www.lavalys.com

Depends what you mean with damage. Some people are very picky about how the components might have aged slightly more etc etc. Which is true, contacts don't like it. But for most people it does not matter, unless you're planning to keep your comp for a very long time (>10 years).

Btw, with components I did not include the battery. See above.

Try undervolting your CPU to reduce the heat if you can.
I like to use RMClock or NHC
