M540 is on socet P so u should be able to change it to:
    Intel Core 2 Duo (T5xx0, T7xx0, T8x00, T9x00)
    Intel Celeron M
    Intel Pentium Dual-Core (T23x0, T2410, T3x00, T4x00)

    ..if chipset allows.

No, it doesn't work that way. Just because the socket has 478 pins does not mean it is compatible. First of all, the pins are not in the same arrangement, so it would not fit. Second of all, the celeron M540 is way more powerful than a 2.4Ghz P4.

A 2.4GHz Pentium 4 (-M, presumably?) would actually be markedly slower than a 1.8GHz Celeron M, since the Celeron M is based on the vastly superior Banias/P6M architecture used for the Pentium M and as a precursor to the Core architecture.

And no, there were never 2.4GHz P4s with HyperThreading, so there's no potential multi-threaded benefit, either.

Anyways, the Aspire 5315 uses a 960GML chipset, and so should support the Socket P (Santa Rosa) Core 2 Duos - specifically, the T7250, T7300, T7500, T7700, and T7800 - if the BIOS supports them.

In theory can you also support the t8100, t8300, t9300 and the t9500 too if there is a Bios support.
