Is the performance difference between the two processors worth $50? I'm mainly going to be using the notebook for gaming.

there's not that much of a difference if it's for gaming but if you had 50 dollars to spare get it if not the p8400 would be fine

Its just a difference of 0.5x multiplier and the difference is not going to affect gaming in any way....
It won't even affect CPU-intensive tasks much..(with a 134MHz inc per core
)
For gaming, you are looking at a good GPU, with at least DDR3 memory (8600M GT or higher) -
I'd probably get the upgrade for $50 but chances are you won't even notice a difference between the 2.

However, GDDR2 9500M GS (an optimized 8600M GT) > GDDR3 8600M GT in benchmarks and game testing, so GDDR3 isn't everything. Though if you had the option of GDDR2 and GDDR3 8600M GT, the GDDR3 is of course the better choice.
