Just curious what the differences are, i read anywhere from none to 50%..i've pretty much got a p8700 // gtx 260m and see a i5 430m // gts 360 for 100 bucks more

The architecture is different, for one the I core's no longer have a FSB and thus communication with peripherals on the motherboard are faster, two, its a quad core processor and thirdly it also has a turbo mode where it uses the power from unused cores on cores that are currently active.

Essentially in every application, its going to perform much better than the Montevina chip (P8700)

    Go for it!

i'm quite sure that even with GGDR5 , GTS360M is gonna be slower than GTX260M with GDDR3.... also i5 might beat the P8700 but in gaming , it will not help.... so i would stick with the P8700 and GTX260M... also what laptop are u buying? Is it the ASUS G51VX.... try getting the version with Q9000.... way better than even the i5 ...

The i5 will probably perform a little better than a P8700, but be warned... A GTS 360 is probably NOT on the level of a GTX 260... Still a good card I'm sure, but not as good.

i actually bought the g51vx from newegg for 1050 w/ p8700 and the 260 and wondering if i made a good decision, i went 150 above my wife's imposed budget of 1000 to get the additional 2 years of warranty (4 total) and wondering if i made a good purchase tbh.

    260m.
gts250m is gimped with only 8 rops vs 16 of the 260m, same as lowend cards like gt 210m.

I would say you made a good purchase. Although, the G51J isn't that much more expensive, and that comes with an i7.

i would return the G51VX and get the G51J... it comes with core i7 and GTX260M... way more future proof... and if u got cash , i would spend about $500 more for G73... it comes with core i7 and the newest ATI card 5870 which pwens everything...starts at $1600 with blue ray , 8Gb ram , Core i7 720qm and 5870 1GB GDDR5... i would spend the cash... you'll nver get a deal like this...

I think the g51vx is a much better purchase, even considering the 'futureproofing' an i7 will make. The i7 only hits 2.8ghz when on one core, and 2.2 using 2 cores. Although the architecture of the chip makes the core i7 much faster at similar clock speeds, the price difference between the two is HUGE. If you spend $1000 for a laptop that lasts 2 years, or $1500 for a laptop that lasts 3 years ... you'd be better off getting a new computer on a more regular basis - you can re-sell your laptop as soon as it's out of warranty, and get a new one that's in warranty.

And seriously. $500? You could get an intel SSD and use it as your main drive for that price. Or go to cuba for a week. Or buy a netbook. That's a lot of money for futureproofing a laptop that runs at 85-95 degrees under load. Also, the i7-720QM will get a refresh soon, that chip is already 6 months old. It's like paying nearly full price for a car that is 6 months old, or paying half price for a car that's just over a year old.

Unless, of course, money is no problem. If that's the case, just max out a dual-sli alienware rig.

Clearly, money is a problem as the OP stated that he was already over his $1000 budget, so suggesting him to upgrade makes no sense.
