i'm looking to buy 2 gigs of ram to put in a vostro i'm going to order for school in a few weeks. whats the difference between pc2 5300 and pc2 5400? and which one do i need for a vostro 1500? thanks

there is no difference. the MHz speed 667 x 8 gives you 5336 which rounded will give you 5400 or 5300.

Speed wise they are the same. Make sure you get low latency RAM though for better performance. It will cost a little more, but nothing too bad. For example, I consider two of these modules.

i think im going to go with a 2gb (1x2gb) package because they are cheaper. i dont think ill be able to notice latency differences. thanks for your help.

Good choice, but latency? 4 clocks seems standard I would not buy 6, I would pay more for 2.5 or 3 but only so much. You should pay attention regardless of what you end up getting.
