G'day folks,
Got an ibm 380 ed lap & trying to figure out the pcmcia.
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=RJJR-3RVK73
Site sez that could have 2xtype I, or 2xtype II, or 1xtype III. Pretty sure I have 2xtype I? If so, is it possible to swap out a type I setup to type II?
Are they all 16 bit? Possible to make 'em 32 bit? And last, I'm not clear on the voltage thing. I think early pcmcia's were 5 volt?
What I'd like is to be 32 bit type II capable mainly for wifi compatible cards and or to be able to use a pcmcia to usb 2 adapter. thx![]()

-not sure if this is the right forum for this type question..

You should go to http://forum.thinkpads.com and post the question there in the appropriate forum for your model. You will get a lot more responses and help there guaranteed. -
We have our own IBM/Lenovo forum right here, why go somewhere else?

Right you are Blondie but the lenovo blog here tends to center around the newer models and issues. Not that that is a bad thing but it does not hurt to diversify your sources and that source is actually pretty good and specific to his woes so why not? I still love this place though...

That's what I was thinking & thx for the link. I do have newer stuff but have been able to revive some older gear that was collecting dust with lightweight linux distros that allows great use of these ol' laps even wifi on the net.. What really jumped out at me at one point while browsing around for info on this lap, which suppose was ~ state of the art when it originally sold new, was that with powerhouse specs
of p166mmx & 32 megs a ram, thing sold for ~ 5k bucks new.
Have a few ol' laps I'm asking info about on this site & outsida here, got one response so far.. "we speak english here"
Wouldn't know about sites for ol' dell latitudes & compaq presarios maybe? (Win 95 -98 laps)
Talked to dell tech about the ol' lap & even they (or at least the fella I was talking to) didn't seem to know much about them.. Said a few times ~ "ohh.. that's an old one"

There weren't very many Dell fan sites out there like the link i sent you to for the thinkpads if any at all now really. The thinkpad base is solid and most of their older machines are actually still up and running. I would not know where to begin to send you for info on those. Good luck getting it out of Dell and HP themselves also. It was one of the reasons i always was a fan of thinkpads. They were always too expensive for me to afford until last year really. But i worked in IT for many years and I have always had access to them. I loved the 600c's and a T23 also. I am thinking about doing like yourself and acquiring a good working T23 or T30 and running a good distro of Linux on there.

Beauty about alota the linux distros out there is with many, you can run 'em live cd (& save everything) without touching the OS installed on the HD & messin it up. You could have a look at Puppy & pclinuxOS-07. Pups the easiest one I've found.
Just burn a iso & take 'em for a spin.

I've tried the live CD thing with the Gentoo distro, but i think i want to go down the route of Linux being the dedicated and only OS on the system. Not sure what model older Thinkpad i want to go with yet though.
