    hi

i thinking of upgrading my processor, but not entirely sure about compatibility

if my laptop shipped with a 7x5 processor (400mhz fsb), would i be able to put a 7x0 processor (533mhz fsb), and see the gains? ie, would there be a problem with running a 533mhz fsb processor on a motherboard that shipped with a 400mhz fsb? would the 533mhz fsb processor still run at 400mhz?

    thanks

    alex

I would upgrade the hard drive and memory first, you'll get more bang there.

i really need the processing power for audio plugins, the ram is maxed, so can't push that any further (1gb micro sodimms are ridiculously priced/hard to find)

No, the 533MHz FSB Pentium M would not run at that speed if your chipset does not support it. If you have a 800 series chipset the processor will run at 400MHz FSB.

agree with miner. if you have an 855 chipset you will still get 400FSB. Only 915 chipset supports 533FSB.

You said you have micro dimms, so I am assuming you have an ultra portable. So just as a note: Sonoma ultra portables still run at 400FSB and only utilise single channel 400MHz DDR2. So your ultra portable's performance isn't that far behind...
