Hi, I'm thinking of getting the Sony Vaio SR (specs listed below). I'm not going to be gaming on it but I will be using programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, etc. Do I need an dedicated graphics unit to run these and similar programs smoothly and quickly? How much of a difference would a dedicated graphics card make.. if any?

    Sony Vaio SR
    Processor: Core2 Duo P8400 (2.26GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 3MB L2 cache)
    RAM: 3GB DDR2 SDRAM (800MHz)
    HD: 250GB (5400rpm)
Graphics: Mobile IntelĀ® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD

    Thanks in advance!

A dedicated graphics card is not needed for Photoshop, etc. The big thing there is a decent processor and plenty of RAM. You should be fine.

According to some articles, future versions of Photoshop will be accelerated by graphics cards; at the moment, however, vespoli's advice is the best way to go.
