I have an old IBM Thinkpad type 2628 which has no hard drive.
Also have some old 2.5 drives how ever it seems like the pins spacing has changed.
If I look into where the hard drive goes it look like a ribbon connector (?50? connections).
The old drives are from 1997 IBM. Look like the pin spacing is wider.
I know there were changes in the ata-33, 66, 100 etc.. but this only had to do with interface speed. Right??
Was there a change in the spacing of the pins?
Could a newer drive be used in the Thinkpad?

You can use a newer ata harddrive in your thinkpad.
Sometimes manufacturers use little adapters which fit on the end of the harddrive.
You should be able to remove the adaptor off of the older harddrive, and put it on a newer ata harddrive.
Standard ata harddrive:

adaptor on harddrive:
Since the 2628 is an older harddrive, it will most likely have issues recognizing a 137Gb or greater ata harddrive.
There should be 39 pins for a standard ata notebook harddrive.
The ata speeds only change interface speed.
If your notebook has an ata 33 bus, you are going to severly limit your new ata harddrive.
I hope this helps.
If you are looking for a cheap 20Gb 4200rpm notebook ata harddrive (same one as in the picture), Pm me and maybe we can make a deal.

Thank you for your reply.
After getting your reply I had a go at the hard drive I alway had.
It turned out that the left side the exterior cover was slightly out of adjustment. I corrected this and it went it.
However on starting it up I got a error
0188.b
Bad crc2
I have searched for an answer and was informed that it might be a bad BIOS install so I will be attempting to correct that.
Again thanks for your reply.
