I recently bought an inspiron 1545 for my girlfriend. Upon arrival, I noticed that Dell sent me the wrong power supply; one that did not even fit into the power jack. Fortunately, my mom has an inspiron as well so I used her power supply. Her's was a 40 watt power supply, and the 1545 takes a 90w one. When i turned it on for the first time while using the 40watt power supply, a message came up saying that it was the wrong PS and asked if i wanted to use it. I said "Yes" and continued. Last week I bought the correct power supply for her computer off the internet, and had it shipped directly to her house. A day after, I sent the computer itself. She told me that the jack isn't charging her laptop, that under power options it says "Plugged in, not charging". I believe this has something to do with the option I clicked when i used the 40 watt power supply. Is there a way to configure those kinds of things? Big rep to anyone who can help me solve this.

Yes, download the latest bios from your manufacturers website (has to be the exact model, otherwise wrong BIOS can render your computer useless) and flash your BIOS (what you download should be a wizard of some sort). Strange enough I saw the entire line of a Toshiba Satellite Pro U400 variant with the same problem and flashing their BIOS fixed it.

If that doesn't work, test with another battery

I would reccomend doing a hard reset on the laptop by holding the power button down for 30 seconds with all power ( battery and adapter ) unplugged. My laptop does this some times too just let it sit for a bit it might go away.

The 40 watt power supply for my mom's 1420 worked just fine for it, can I rule out it being a BIOS issue?

Updating the bios won't hurt and you may get some new features.
    worth a try anyway.

Hi. Make sure your power cord is plugged in to the wall socket and your Dell notebook also (not just either one).
