    Hi there,

A friend of mine managed to get a virus on his computer. I run Avast Home edition (it was already on the laptop) which found about 10 infected files. Although the virus was cleaned the overall behaviour of the laptop wasn't ok .Some setting were locked. Each time I changed them they went back to what they were before.

I'm trying to reinstall windows. I tried different windows XP backup CDs and each time I'm getting the following message:
    External Cache: 256K installed
    Boot CD-ROM Type: Non-Emulation Booting

I though it was a faulty optical drive, but I'm still getting the same message even with a different optical drive.

    Please help

    Quick update

I've just downloaded Ubunto and its live CD is working fine on my friend laptop.
So what's wrong with my XP backup CDs? and what's wrong with this laptop?

Are you using the XP Recovery disk that came with your laptop? Did you burn the XP recovery disc that you are using? That error is usually associated with an incorrectly made copy of the Windows CD.

    Hi
the windows CD is a full version, not an OEM version. It's my own CD(s), and it didn't come with the laptop.

I've tried 4 different CDs (burned using nero). They work fine in my computer but not in my friend laptop.

Thanks but there is no such a function in the Bios. The only things that can be set in the bios are the time/date + the boot order.

With the same made of CDs used for windows, I burned and installed Linux Ubunto successfuly about an hour ago.

So, your burned all the discs you are trying to boot from? Because it is known that Nero has problems at creating CD-R Boot sections when copying from other discs. The way around this is to create a CD image from the original installation disc and then burning the image (which would be what you did for Linux).

I've tried the ISO route too. All the four CDs I've made work fine on my computer, but not in my friend's.
