for a laptop, will i be able to game after three years on medium detail without lag with a 2.6ghz processor and a 9800GT graphics card? Or should i get 2.8 ghz processor? 4gbs of ddr3 ram is good enough?

I don't think anyone would really know.
It's hard to predict the future and what games will be released with what hardwarespecs.

But 9800GT is a high end GPU, so it should last quite some time atleast.

2.6Ghz is enough. 2.8Ghz will not give any boost compared to 2.6Ghz.
4GB or not, doesn't matter as it's easy to upgrade whenever you need to. DDR3 doesn't have any benefits compared to DDR2 btw, so if you can go for DDR2, cheaper and just as good, it's the processor arcitecture that is the limiting factor when it comes around for DDR2 vs DDR3.
Only the new core i7 will take benefits from DDR3, and those are only on desktops.

But i can say, i'd be satisfied with a 9800GT 512MB, so i'd save the notebook for a couple of years.
