Hi everyone, how is it going? I have a technical hardware question. I have a laptop with a pretty powerful CPU and a quadro 2000m GPU. I need a little bit more graphics power and I was thinking about changing the GPU and updating it (maybe with a quadro 3000m). I did it some time ago with another laptop with no problem but I'm not sure I can do it again on this one. How can I know if it might be possible? What precautions should I take? Any advice?
    Thanks!

I doubt any Lenovo laptops these days have MXM slots, so you won't be able to change out the 2000M. You could try making your own ViDock though...

Yes it is a lenovo and it is a w520. So I can't change it by any chance?
The ViDock is for external video as far as I understood but it's not a choice for me since I need to always be mobile but thanks for the suggestion?
I have no idea what the MXM slot is, is there anything I can do to replace the 2000m? Mod or something?
    Thanks!

Yeah, W520 doesn't allow you to change the card. You're stuck with the 2000M, unless you'd like to buy a new laptop (though I take it that's out of the question).

MXM is a quasi-standard for video cards that allows users to replace their GPUs with other cards of the same standard. For example, some Dell laptops allow you to switch out a GPU with another Dell MXM GPU. I think it's a messy standard and it probably won't pan out too well.

Thanks a lot for the help.
Yes I can't change the laptop and I will not change it for sure for a long time sadly. Maybe I will try with some overclock if possible, I don't really have many choices. It's a bit sad, I really like Lenovo machines for a lot of different reasons but their choices of graphics cards created and will probably still create me some issues, not too bad but still issues.

Thank you again for the help.

I wished that the W520 would have been offered with the FirePro 5950M (I would have gotten that), though the 2000M is on par with the GeForce 555M, so it's not that bad of a card.

You are right it is not a bad video card, in the majority of the cases it can get the job done but in the long run it will straggle more and more and I would like to keep the machine as long as possible, especially because I really love it, build quality, screen, keyboard, noise level, it's one of the best machine I have ever had and I might end up getting another Lenovo in the future (hopefully they will offer something more in terms of video cards). I will try to see if overclocking the 2000m can be helpful.
Do you have any idea if it is possible and if it worths the try?

Overclocking the 2000M? I've kept mine at stock since I don't play a lot of newer games (I *just now* bought Supreme Commander 2 lol).

As for Lenovo, you can always look at their Ideapad Y series if you want to buy from them a gaming laptop. Of course the build quality isn't Thinkpad-like, but it's still pretty good, judging from the Y470p I played with for a week or two. The W530's most powerful card, the K2000M, isn't much more than an updated 2000M. I suppose if you want to keep a business laptop for gaming, you might have to look at the Precision line and their FirePro cards (I wouldn't recommend HP).

If overclocking watch your temps. If your temps are high you might see if it has thermal pad. If does have a thermal pad you can replace it with a copper shim and drop your temps like a hot potato. Lower temps make OCing easier.

EDIT: i say that because a lot of onboard nvidia laptops come with retartedly thick thermal pads over the GPU.

The "k" stand for kepler, which is a new 22nm design. That's more than just a mere update. Its a good deal more efficient and lot more powerful.

i want the clocks and the vram type used, I know how efficient and powerful the 640m/650m/660m can be.

hell even the 650m in the RMBP can give the same performance as the 660m in the g75

and AFAIK the gt70 only packs a 670m, which is fermi. didnt know they packed a 660m
