I can't say specifically for the G74SX, but I did a WLAN upgrade on my brother's M5030, it was a weak 1x1. I bought a Tyco 3x3 WLAN antennae upgrade on Ebay for about 3 dollars shipped. It requires you to remove the keyboard, palmrest, LCD bezel and you just route the WLAN antennae through the pre-existing grooves. The one I bought had way too much extra antennae, so I just zip tied the excess and tucked it in the extra space in the bottom cover.

The hard part will be doing the cable routing just like Tsunade Hime described, if it is anything like the G73, it will take quite a bit of disassembly to do it properly. One thing to take note of is that if you get something like an Intel 6300 to replace a stock Atheros card, even using it with two antennas will be better than the stock Atheros card.
