if u have your laptop plugged into the wall, and something were to happen, like someone trips over the cord, or there is a power surge, will your laptop be ok? like...will it turn off, or will it run off the battery? im more concerned about the first one seeing as how i got a surge protector for my laptop

your laptop will be fine. it will just run off battery.
-
The laptop will switch to battery power if it is unpluged.

A power surge might fry some components if you don't have a surge protector between the socket and the power brick.
Minor surges will be survivable, since the power brick just cuts the power off and the notebok continues to run from the battery. But a major surge might fry the brick and maybe go thru and reach the notebook causing some major harm.
If you get power surges where you are, it is advisable to use a surge protector. It's little to pay compared to what a surge might do. -
If someone trips over teh power cord, you shouldn't be worried about the power surge - make sure your notebook doesn't fly off the desk.
Surge protectors are required when there is either no backup and the current goes off spontaneously causing damage to electrical components in your system or when there is continous voltage fluctuation. -
I usually take out the battery when i plugged into wall. I think if you put your battery in your laptop while plugged in, the battery will keep charging and that will decrease the life of the battery. Back to the topic, yes power surge will happen if you knock off the ac cord unless you have battery in the laptop. Then it should be ok.

Sorry to go a bit off-topic here,but:
How can there be a power surge if you are cut off from AC power(and provided you don't have the battery plugged in,like in Fuyuki's case)? Power surges are essentially voltage spikes caused by excessive current flow. How can there be excessive current flow if you are cut off from the current? I can understand if you suddenly plug it into a wall outlet with your unit on (excessive current flow may exceed reverse breakdown potential in diodes, for example). -
ok well...i got some little surge protector from dell, and i was wondering if that was any good (like, if it would actually protect the laptop)

Well if there's ever a power surge, the surge protector's "fuse" will cut off and prevent any current flowing through to your notebook, and thus protecting it. It's worth investing in if you have voltage fluctuations or something like that.
